When Should You Get A Bike Fit: Now

By: Dave Ripley

As fitters we often get asked, “when is the best time to get a bike fit or have my position evaluated?”

The answer is NOW

The cool part about that statement is that it doesn’t matter when the question is asked - the answer is the same. Now is the best time to make sure that you are fit correctly on your bike. The basics of bike fit are comfort, power and aerodynamics. There is never a time that you should sacrifice those basics.

But what if I have a race in a few weeks...isn't it too close to make any fit changes?

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that you can’t change anything with your fit in the same training cycle as your race. That is not entirely true. A proper fit should leave you comfortable on your bike, which is never a bad thing, and your pedaling mechanics optimized for power.

Before you run out and completely modify everything, you need to make sure that you are working with a good and experienced fitter. Even though NOW is the best time to have your fit looked at, if you are so far off from optimal there may be some drastic changes required. Those changes can take some time for your body to adapt to.

Everything on your bike fit is dependent on your ability to position and posture on your saddle. If you are not currently on a saddle that supports you skeletally or allows you to posture properly, you will never be comfortable. This is something that you could change at almost any time, as long as the rest of the position is optimized.

Small positioning changes will instantly leave you relaxed and more comfortable. However, large changes (like significant saddle height or bar adjustments) may require multiple phases to allow for adaptation. A good fitter (this is a HUGE assumption, so do your research) will know what adjustments can be made now and what will require more time.

Fits aren't always a one and done adventure (some are) and may require weeks to months of adjustment and adaptation to reach the end goal or vision. Don't wait, get fit NOW.
